For art to be successful, the opinion of the artist doesn't matter. If people like it then it is a success, and if they don't then it isn't. During his life nobody thought Van Gogh had any talent, but today he is considered one of the greatest artists who ever lived. He died poor and alone, and yet today he would have been rich and popular. But the only difference between now and then is that today people think he is good. Which shows that unless your art is liked by the people, it doesn't matter if you have all the talent in the world.
